Equipment Recommendations:

We recommend that every ARES member in the GTA West District try to obtain the following equipment for packet:

A VHF/UHF capable FM radio able to run at least 20 watts.

Antenna

A TAPR compatible 1200 baud TNC - most are using the KPC-3

A laptop running Windows 98, 2000, XP or Vista. (2000 or higher hopefully)

Appropriate cabling to link radio, TNC, computer, etc.

A black & white basic printer - inkjet or what ever

A 12 V DC to 120 V AC  inverter that can run the laptop & printer.

A copy of the Standard Operating Procedures for your area.

Paper, pencils, etc.

Note: In some cases you may be working at a facility where everything except the computer is supplied, but if you are able to equip yourself as indicated, you will be invaluable to your ARES group.
